The Necks

Live at the Factory Theatre, Sydney. The Necks defy categorisation. Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums), and Lloyd Swanton (bass) conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms. These three musicians are among the most respected and in-demand in Australia and internationally, working in every field from pop to avant-garde. Check out their relatively recent collaboration with electronic legends Underworld on the epic 47 min track Appleshine Continuum to see what we mean. Featuring lengthy pieces which are totally improvised and slowly unravel in the most intoxicating fashion, frequently underpinned by an insistent deep groove, no two performances are ever the same. Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, the music of The Necks remains among the most unique in the world today. This show from 2008, entitled ‘Guelph’, is just one facet of this extraordinary band. (And apologies – as it’s a single ‘song’, we can’t split out any free track for this one!)
